Reminder, just in case you thought it was 1995 because the headlines are about Charlie Sheen’s bad behavior, it’s actually 2010.

In fact, our first Week in Review of this fresh new decade is full of menchildren (mendren?), their naughty ways and the women who tolerate them before they empty out their side of the bedroom and secure legal counsel.

So, who caught Two and a Half Men in syndication the other night…?

1. Spotty Sheen: The Heidi Fleiss-era bad boy—more popular than ever now thanks to an overrated hit sitcom, Hollywood’s short memory and his twin sons—did his image no favors by getting arrested in Aspen on Christmas for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill his wife of nine months, Brooke Mueller, while wielding a knife. Both supposedly want out of their marriage—despite all the love ‘n’ stuff—for various reasons. Sheen is one of the highest paid sitcom stars aroud. If you were in Muellers’ shoes, would your prenup suffice? Then again, she doesn’t exactly have a spotless record, either. Oh, if only walls, or Denise Richards, could talk…

2. The Odd Couple: Not one to slink down the totem pole of douches dudes behaving shadily, Jon Gosselin blamed Hailey Glassman for trashing his (or their?) NYC apartment. The apparently over-it 22-year-old says all she did was take the TV and a few other things that belonged to her on her way out and did not leave the place torn asunder. Even though Hailey claims Jon pushed her during a fight and Jon’s attorney has threatened Hailey with jail, the mature, rational adults are currently trying to work out their differences.

3. Fallout Boy: Tiger Woods lost another multimillion-dollar sponsorship, his third since he crashed his clown car and 12 alleged girlfriends rolled out. But look on the bright side, Tiger: AT&T isn’t the only carrier with good unlimited-texting plans. (And for the record: Unfortunately, it was indeed Tiger Woods in Florida that night. He wasn’t in Arizona like that hoax email suggested.)

3. Schadenfreude: Rush Limbaugh was hospitalized after having chest pains while on vacation in Hawaii. Some of you actually rejoiced. Funny world we live in.

4. Bridge to Nowhere: The Palins and Johnstons are at it again. This time Bristol and Levi are battling over custody of their son Tripp.
5. Winter TV Wonderland: Life will go on after the demise of The Tyra Show. Watch With Kristin is counting down the top 10 can’t-miss season premieres coming your way in the new year. First, tell us what returning series you’re most excited about—Lost, American Idol, Damages, Ice Road Truckers…Then vote for your fave fabulous female on the small screen. The competition is heating up, and only one woman will be on top when all is said and done.

6. Bada-$#&@!: Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi had a few choice words—none of them printable—for Dominos Pizza, which pulled its ads from MTV’s Jersey Shore because of…well…the content of Jersey Shore.

7. Fairytale Ending: Turns out Taylor Swift won’t be riding off into the sunset on the back of Taylor Lautner’s white horse. Jude Law and Sienna Miller, not to mention Leonardo DiCaprio and Bar Refaeli, may still have a chance, though.
8. Errata: New Moon was practically one big mistake. As was 17 Again, although you probably didn’t have to tell Matthew Perry that.

9. Malfeasance: The police chief involved in the break-in at SJP’s surrogate’s house got prison time…Mike Tyson was cleared in his November pap fracas…Roman Polanski is touched by all the support since his September arrest.

10. Odds ‘n’ Ends: Get to know Rosie O’Donnell’s new ladyfriend…Check out Kourtney Kardashian’s baby boy…Chris Robinson’s populating his new nest…Hélio Castroneves welcomed a daughter…Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart are having a girl…Van Morrison was hacked and therefore did not have a baby…Kudos to Ellen and Tim from PETA…Thriller was made even more historic…R.I.P., Jimmy Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold…Brittany Murphy’s death certificate was released.

And 2009’s Biggest Bomb Was…Not What You Think

The Twilight sequel was kinda popular. The Transformers sequel was kinda gigantic. Land of the Lost was neither.

But you didn’t need us to tell you that. You needed us to digest the box-office year that was, and spit out: the Nine Things About 2009 You Didn’t Know but Are About to Learn:

1. New Moon beat Harry Potter. In bang for buck. New Moon made more than 12 times its $50 million budget ($635 million worldwide); Half-Blood Prince “only” made about four times its $250 million price tag.

2. Harry Potter beat everything. The sixth boy-wizard adventure was the year’s overall No. 1 film, with $924 million in the worldwide bank, even if Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the No. 1 film domestically—and the only one to top $400 milllion stateside.

3. Will Ferrell is off the hook. Astro Boy, which ran a $45 million deficit, not Ferrell’s Land of the Lost, which “only” fell $35 million shy of matching its budget, or Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That ($37 million in the red) was the biggest bomb. As far as we can tell. Only the accountants know for sure. Other money losers: Bruce Willis’ Surrogates; Gerard Butler’s Gamer; and Planet 51, which is still in theaters, so there’s hope, but probably not $30 million worth of hope.

4. Sandra Bullock was the last movie star standing. Only three movies in the year’s domestic Top 15 were not franchise flicks or toons. Bullock starred in two of them: The Blind Side and The Proposal. (With apologies to John Cusack, explosions starred in the third, 2012.)

5. Emma Roberts is a bigger box-office star than Julia Roberts. The teenaged Roberts’ Hotel for Dogs outgrossed her auntie’s Duplicity by nearly $40 million worldwide.

6. Star Trek isn’t as universal as its Federation alliance would suggest. The franchise reboot made less money overseas than any film in the domestic Top 10, per Box Office Mojo stats. Another surprise from that group: Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs made the most money overseas—a monstrous $687 million.

7. The Blair Witch Project wasn’t 10 years ago; it was a million years ago. While Paranormal Activity was stealing Blair Witch’s schtick, grossing $100 million-plus off an $11,000 budget, The Objective, the latest film from Blair Witch codirector Daniel Myrick, was grossing $95, per The-Numbers.com.

8. Kids films for grown-ups add up to nothing for nobody. Exhibit A: Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are ($100 million budget; $75 million worldwide gross). Exhibit B: Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox ($40 million budget; $20 million worldwide gross).

9. People are spending their unemployment benefits to see Avatar. Or the same 10 rich folks are standing in line again and again and again. Those are two theories to explain how Hollywood continued to buck the recession, and put itself on course for a record $10.3 billion year, per Exhibitor Relations. Sure, ticket prices, driven by 3D and IMAX, were at an all-time high ($7.48 average). But actual attendance was up from last year, too.

Were Miley and Selena Told to Diss New Moon?

Why are people so up in arms about the comments Miley Cyrus made about not liking Twilight? I’m sure there are plenty more people out there that don’t care for it either.
Miley Cyrus—and fellow Disney pixie Selena Gomez—sure do dislike themselves some Twilight, yes they do. Miley told a radio station this week: “It’s a cult. I don’t believe in it.” And Gomez then confided in Bonnie Hunt that when it comes to the Saga flicks, “I don’t watch them.”
Which is odd, because just this past June, she was asked about Twilight and said: “It was good. It was really good.”
Hmmm.
What people are wondering here is whether Miley, and now Taylor Lautner’s punkinhead of an ex, were compelled to say nasty things. Because no teenager is allowed to hate Edward Cullen. It is the Tween Code, and it must never be rent asunder. So, people assume, something sinister must be going on, and by “sinister,” people suspect “Disney.” Did the Mouse have a hand in this?
Well…
Certainly studio contracts do contain some muzzling of their stars. For example, if Miley actually loathed that sunny, singing Hannah Montana character she plays, she couldn’t exactly let loose on Disney in the press without suffering some sort of legal backlash. But do those contracts also require nastiness toward perceived rivals?
Not likely, entertainment attorneys tell me.
“I would be a little surprised if there were something in their Disney contracts that said, ‘You can’t comment favorably on a product that is being produced by Warner Brothers,’ ” for example, says Jeffrey Spitz, attorney at the entertainment law firm Greenberg Glusker.
“If a studio were asking something like that, the person’s attorney would probably say, ‘Wait a minute, what are you talking about here?’ It’s just too weird.”
So what’s left?
Casting directors have told me in the past that occasionally an actor will disparage an overly popular franchise just to get some cred with a new, older audience. Which could be the case with these tweens, who likely are trying to grow up and away from, like, tween stuff.
Or, sometimes one must simply apply Occam’s razor—if Miley says she doesn’t like Twilight, she just might simply…not like Twilight. End of story.

New Moon Poll: For Fanatics Only

We know the box office for New Moon is going through the roof like a werewolf chasing a vampire bat or something, so obviously fans are digging it. Reviewers, of course, not so much.
But taking a cue from our modular review of New Moon, we’ve decided to do a poll for Twilight saga fanatics only.
So take the poll below and sound off in the comments section. (Note: We’ll have another poll later for people who are barf-bucket sick of all these suckers, so store up that vitriol!)

New Moon Makes a Lot of Money (But Not Quite Batman Money)

It was big. It was bigger than expected. It was record-setting. But more on the new Sandra Bullock movie later.
New Moon will close out its remarkable debut weekend with an estimated $140.7 million, its studio reported today.
“I dare say in all the office pools, I don’t think anyone had near this top gross,” Summit Entertainment distribution president Richie Fay said.
The towering take makes the Twilight sequel the third-biggest opener in Hollywood history. Or, to put it in a way that will appease vampire-dismissing superhero boosters: Yes, The Dark Knight’s opening-weekend mark is safe; and, yes, Spider-Man 3’s second-place slot is secure.
But, get over your spandex-supporting selves because New Moon sucked up its own share of records:
• Biggest November opening ever, flying past Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’s $102.7 million;
• Biggest opening two-day gross ever ($115.9 million Friday-Saturday), edging The Dark Knight’s $114.8 million start;
• And all the previously reported rest: Biggest opening day ever ($67.2 milion); biggest single day ever (ditto); biggest midnight showing ever ($26.3 million).
About the only thing New Moon didn’t do was, yes, claim the opening-weekend crown.
Even though New Moon made more money in its first two days than The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3, the superhero movies scored bigger Sundays. Per Summit’s projections, New Moon will gross $24.8 million today, versus The Dark Knight’s $43.6 million Sunday and Spider-Man 3’s $39.9 million Sunday.
At this point, it’s worth taking a step back, and remembering that prior to Friday’s eye-popping midnight take, nobody was calling for New Moon to even make a serious run at The Dark Knight. “I don’t think we ever thought we could break their record,” Fay said.
Some more New Moon factoids:
• The Twilight franchise is growing on guys. The first movie’s opening weekend audience was comprised of about 17-18 percent males; New Moon’s XY-contingent hit 20 percent. Said Fay: “This time around, the young boys figured out it’s not too bad to be dragged along by their dates to see this movie.”
• As expected, teens and tweens did not alone make New Moon. Half the audience was over age 21.
• As expected, movie reviews were meaningless. The film’s critic-driven Rotten Tomatoes score was a lowly 29 percent; its audience-driven Cinema Score grade was a lofty A-minus.
• Internationally, New Moon grossed $118.1 million, bringing its three-day, worldwide total to $258 million.
• New Moon is already the 15th top-grossing movie of the year. Of that group, it is one of only five movies to not cost at least $100 million.
• New Moon covered its $50 million budget by Friday night.
As for the franchise’s future, Eclipse, the third Twilight movie, is set to be released next June. Breaking Dawn, the fourth Twilight movie, will be released… Or announced… Well, when exactly?
“We are negotiating with Stephenie Meyer the best we can,” Fay said, “and we’re well along.”
Does the exec think the franchise author will take a look at this weekend’s New Moon grosses, and say, “So, now what are you going to pay me?”
Fay laughed. Then he said, “We feel fairly confident we can get this done.”
Elsewhere, in non-New Moon box-office news (and, yes, there was some):
• The Blind Side, aka the new Bullock movie, was its own kind of big, with the football weepy grossing $34.5 million, the most ever for a sports drama, per Box Office Mojo stats. And, yes, that includes every Rocky movie ever made.
• Even more impressive, The Blind Side was the biggest-opening Bullock movie ever, topping even the star’s summer hit, The Proposal.
• No, Planet 51 didn’t cost a bajillion dollars like some CGI comedies, but it did cost a reported $60 million, and it didn’t come close to impressing with a fourth-place, $12.6 million debut.
• Impressing is what Precious ($11 million; $21.4 million overall) keeps doing. Theater for theater, the Oscar hopeful made more money than any Top 10 film, save New Moon.

• Penélope Cruz’s Broken Embraces ($107,597 at two theaters) and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox ($199,142 at four theaters) were actually both bigger than New Moon—in per-screen average.
• Michael Jackson’s This Is It ($1.6 million; $70.2 million overall) slipped from the Top 10 after a three-weekend stay, which isn’t bad considering it was only supposed to play two weekends.
• Also departing the Top 10: the superhuman Paranormal Activity ($1.4 million; $106.1 million overall); and, the super-dud The Box ($505,000; $14.5 million overall, per Box Office Mojo).
Here’s a look at the weekend’s top-grossing films based on Friday-Sunday estimates as compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

Rob Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and New Moon Cast Talk Vampire Burnout

Stephenie Meyer revealed during her recent visit to Oprah that she doesn’t know if there will be a fifth Twilight book because she’s “a little burned out on vampires right now.”
So it got us thinking: If she’s suffering from bloodsucker fatigue, could others being feeling it, too?
Is Robert Pattinson jonesing for a break from vampires? What about Kristen Stewart? We asked and they answered.
Read on to find out what they and many of their costars told us at last night’s New Moon premiere…
Pattinson insists he’s not itching for a timeout from Edward Cullen & Co., even though he’s taking one. “I’m doing a bunch of different things next year, so technically I am taking a break from vampires,” he said.
Besides, Pattz said, “I never felt like I was playing a vampire in the first place.”
Ms. Stewart agreed. “This is so not a vampire movie for me,” she insisted. “I feel like Edward is so not a vampire. I don’t feel liking I’m playing with a vampire at all.”
Jackson Rathbone said he’s able to put his neck-biting life aside for other things. “I am not all vampire all the time,” he said, laughing. “I’m actually in a band, 100 Monkeys, and I just produced my first film this year called Girlfriend.”
Kellan Lutz, however, can’t get enough of his vampireness. “Never,” Lutz said when asked if he’s ever felt like it was too much. “I love vampires. They’re sexy and mysterious. I love being Emmett. I really do love it. I’m glad there are four books, and hopefully we will get to make the fourth one.”
Edi Gathegi said he spent just the right amount of time playing Laurent.
“If I played a character every day that was a vampire, I’d probably be over it,” Gathegi said. “But I didn’t work for that long. My character isn’t in it much.”
Still, that doesn’t mean he’s up for more fang-filled work. “I want to break out of that,” Gathegi said.
Maybe the vampire fatigue thing is a problem reserved for writers?
“I love vampires,” said Melissa Rosenberg, who has written the scripts for all three Twilight flicks, “but I think the Twilight series will probably fulfill my vampire lust.”
She hopes to cap it all off with—you guessed it—Breaking Dawn. “I can’t talk about it,” she said when asked if there was any good news to share about the possibility of a fourth movie. “It would be an honor to do it. I love working in this world and these characters. You want to see them continue.”

We told you the romantic city of Paris might be what Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart needed to get in the mood.
Robsten were just spotted holding hands as they were getting ready to board a private jet at Le Bourget airport tonight leaving France.
This is hardly the first time the two have been caught in public hand-holding, but it is the first time they’ve been pictured. And seriously, this is like the oldest form of romance if you ask us. Way more meaningful than playing tonsil-hockey in public.
So speak up, Robsten naysayers: Is this good enough for ya?

New Moon McNuggets: Rock Hard Nipples, Wolf-Pack Tats & Strange Superpowers

Dakota Fanning loves being evil! The New Moon wolf pack tattoos might turn into the real thing for some of the actors! And the leader of the Volturi wishes he had a very…unusual…supernatural ability.
If you haven’t already, check out full pieces on that romantic devil, RPattz, and his tabloid (at least) sweetheart, KStew. And then move on to a roundup of all the stuff you should know about today’s day-long press conference promoting New Moon.
So just what does Michael Sheen wish he could do? Well…

* When asked what supernatural power he’d like to have, he replied, “I would like to have the power to always look like I’m three centimeters to the right of where I am. I do have that power.
* Dakota Fanning loved being an evil tiny vampire of the Volturi clan in New Moon. “The highlight of playing Jane was getting that costume, and the red contact lenses. I was really exciting about that, and getting to play an evil character.”
* She’s also obsessed with baby names, “with what people name their children,” she explained. “Just, like, friends, anybody. I know a lot of people’s baby names, I have been planning the names of my children since I was four.”
* The four actors who play members of the Wolf Pack are mulling getting real Wolf Pack tattoos after the final film in the Twilight saga wraps. But Taylor Lautner? “I don’t know,” he said. “I will have to think about that; I will have to discuss it with my pack.”
* The Wolf Pack also revealed Lautner’s stealth talent: “He took us bowling” during filming in Canada, one wolf said. “He’s an amazing bowler.”
* As for Pattz, he boxes in his time off, Lautner revealed today.
* Fame brings out the crazy in strange people. Here’s a story that Kristen Stewart shared about her recent promotional trip to South America. Pattz was in Japan at the time. “This guy was chasing after us … this one fellow was like, ‘Where is Hobart? Where is Hobart?‘ And he was distraught and irrational, and I was like, ‘It’s Robert!’”
* It was so cold during the outdoor scenes that the cast of the ever-shirtless Wolf Pack came up with some pretty interesting running gags. “That we should have a cutting glass business,” one wolf pack member revealed. “Our nipples were rock hard.”
TMI? Of course not! This is the Twilight saga we’re talking about.

Fashion Police: Kristen Stewart’s Too Cool for Hairstyling

Kristen Stewart stopped in Brazil Sunday to promote New Moon (or Lua Nova). Sadly, there was no Robert Pattinson at her side, only Taylor Lautner, who actually managed to keep his shirt on.
Per usual, Kristen was doing her too-cool-for-school thing in a sequined skirt and trendy blazer. It’s like business rock ‘n’ roll casual, perfect for the office or talking about why people in Brazil like vampires.
In fact, we didn’t really have any complaints until we panned up to the hair. Oof. That Joan Jett cut is really taking a long time to grow out, and K.Stew doesn’t even seem to bother styling it. We’ve all been there, growing out short hair is the worst, but maybe just try a little updo, Teen Choice Awards-style.
We will continue to monitor the hair situation as the New Moon tour continues on. Next stop: Mexico.

Robert Pattinson Kicks Off New Moon Month in Japan!

Robert Pattinson sported that famous Yankees hat as he took off from LA on Saturday and arrived at the Narita International Airport in Japan today. He was in LA for a few days to refresh before heading out and greeting fans with a smile. He may have been your dream Halloween date, but he didn’t have a chance to dress up this year. Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner headed off in another direction for their own promotional duties — starting in Brazil — while Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene partied the night away in Las Vegas. Even though Rob himself didn’t put on any costumes, there were tons of Edward Cullen and Bella Swans at Halloween celebrations around the world — did you see any great ones?
